My first couple ideas for the layout of the poster.

So I decided that having the phenakistoscope at the bottom of the poster would be better as this meant that once the person has cut out the phenakistoscope they still have a useful poster that can go up on their wall. Having it in the middle meant that if hung up it would have a huge circle in the middle or be in pieces, meaning that they would be less likely to keep the poster once used.

Next step

So instead of making just a phenakistoscope. Matt has given me the idea of making an educational poster that goes with the phenakistoscope. When researching I came across a lot of posters which caught my eye (shown below, found in Google images). So for my final physical I will be making four educational posters for those wanting to learn the apparatus with a cut out phenakistoscope to show an animation of what the trick looks like as well as my frame by frame images.

Looking into how to actually make a phenakistoscope, I found this video (linked below). I will be basing my own phenakistoscope on this how to video.

Here are some different types of phenakistoscopes. I think these will be interesting to make :)

When trying to make a GIF in photoshop, turns out my files that I'm using are too big to save correctly, so won't let me. So I have made an animation using 'nero vision'. In this animation I have made silohettes from my pictures.
I do like the effect it has but I think the physical form of a phenakistoscope would be more interesting to play with than watching a small 10sec video.

Physical

So I have two ideas for my physical. The first is in physical form and the other digital.
My digital idea is to make each apparatus into a GIF. This is a 'standard compressed file format used for pictures' (http://dictionary.reference.com) Although I'm not sure how I'm going to go about that just yet...
The physical idea is to make a phenakistoscope, which will create the same as a GIF but in a physical form.

I want to use my photos as a source of educational use for those wanting to learn new tricks on different apparatuses in mens gymnastics. The frame by frame will act as a guide for the participant learning the new tricks.

Ok so looks like I'll be going with the third one. Which was inspired by Edward Muybridge. The frame by frame shows the viewer exactly what is required of them to do for the trick they wish to perform.
Out of the six apparatuses I shot, I will only be doing four of them. They are the vault, floor, pommel horse and the rings. I found that out of the six. these produced more interesting frame by frames.
Next is looking into what I can do for my physical....

Ideas - floor

Light contact sheet

I found that the lights turned out just like I wanted them to. But sadly it is too dangerous to do the same tricks as in my photoshoots. Only basic ones are able to be done and I was limited to the floor, vault and trampoline. Because of this I won't be using lights again for this project.

Contemplations

After looking over some other ideas for this project I was thinking that I could possibly tape a light on my models arm and leg and using bulb show where the gymnasts arms and legs go when doing their tricks as they tend to move too fast for observers to know exactly how they're doing it. Although this will be quite hazardous as I will have to do it in the dark, which means that this could possibly not work... But hopefully it does :)

The gymnast I have doing the tricks is currently at nationals so he won't be available for a few days.
I will still be using him. So in the meantime I will be experimenting with movement itself and working out my technique for when taking the actual photos. So I will be taking continuous pictures of people running, doing star-jumps, etc. As these are about the same pace as the flips done in gymnastics.

Artist model

Edward Muybridge

For this project I will be using Edward Muybridge as my artist model. I have chosen Muybridge because I feel that his technique will show the gymnastics in the way I want them to be shown. Taking the image step by step showing each important movement the gymnast takes.
Just like Muybridge, I will do frame by frame to show the viewer exactly wha step is taken to achieve the performed trick.

Proposal

For this final project in photography as data, I want to look into gymnastics. Looking into how a gymnast moves and rotates their body to achieve the tricks they do.
I will be looking into many different types of gymnastics from the floor to the rings to the bars. Looking at all their different tricks they do.
The aim will be to collect as much data as possible as to how one does the tricks. I want to use the images as a way to show people how the trick is achieved.

PROJECT THREE - DATA

Physical Model

For my physical model I used the original negatives of flora. I used each individual negative as the petal for the flower and bound it with red wool. I also used wire as the stalk.

In a couple of my images there are some random black lines that go over the image I'm not quite sure why they appeared.
In the seventh image, I tried overlapping the image. In Upper Hutt there are two round a bouts have bird statues in the middle. I tried overlapping both round a bouts but it didn't really turn out how I wanted it to.

Review of Experiments

After carefully looking over my different experiments I have decided further my experiment of the petals behind the negative. I feel like this is a very interesting effect, which I very much like. Next I will be taking photos using colour film, seeing if there are different effects that are produced from colour film in comparison to black and white.

Experiments

For my first experiment I burned the negative. I didn't expect it to turn out the way it did. For some reason I thought that it would burn like paper only slower. Instead it just warped the plastic. A nice effect I thought.

Here I soaked this negative in kerosene. Because of the high level of chemicals I thought it would produce some sort of effect on the negative, whether it be discolouration or fading the image completely. As you can see above I was wrong. Other than making it smell really bad the kerosene had no effect on my image.

Above I had the same issue as the kerosene. Here I soaked the negative in lemon juice, due to it's high acidity I thought it may have some sort of effect on the image. As you can see it did not effect it even when I put it through Photoshop to correct the colouration.

This image produce a subtle but interesting effect. I poured maple syrup onto this image, after a couple hours I then wrapped it up in glad wrap. Because of the creases formed from the glad wrap, there were patterns produced. Although they are hardly visible.

Majority of my images are of trees, flowers or shrubs. Because of this I wanted to experiment with putting petals and leaves underneath the negative and see what kind of effect was produced. As you can see once put through Photoshop to correct the colours from negative the petal behind the negative went into negative colouration. I thought of this idea because my images are in black and white, so I thought that putting colourful petals and leaves behind the image would bring colour into the image. But it has produced a whole new, interesting effect.
